  • Morning Sessions (Learn to Sail)

    Morning classes run from 9 am to noon, Monday - Friday. All morning classes are for students new to the sport of sailing with little to no sailing experience.
    The Rock Stars class is a course designed for kids who are between the ages of 5 to 7 and are in their first or second year of sailing. This class focuses on getting the kids comfortable on a boat and having fun on the water. The class teaches the very beginning parts of sailing: the parts of the boat, how to dock a boat, learning how to trim sails, and steering a boat. The class is set up where an instructor will accompany anywhere from 2 to 4 kids in a boat and sail around Mission Bay. This is a great class for introducing kids to the sport of sailing. Classes run Monday - Friday 9:00am to 12:00pm. Sessions 1, 5 and 7 are SOLD OUT. Please email juniors@mbyc.org to be placed on the waiting list.
    The Little Puffs class is a course designed to teach kids 6 to 8 years old how to sail a small boat. In this class the students will be sailing a boat called a Sabot, which is an 8 foot dinghy, around Mission Bay. The class teaches the fundamentals of sailing, including parts and terminology, how to trim sails, and driving the boat. at the beginning of the class, the students will double up in a boat in order to feel comfortable and ease the responsibility aspect of sailing. This is a great class for first time sailors and students that are interested in sailing at a young age. Classes run Monday - Friday 9:00am to 12:00pm.     The Beginning Sabots class is a course designed for kids that are between the ages of 8 - 12 and are first time or former summer sailors. This class is focused in fun and learning and is intended to introduce the kids to racing at the end of the course. Classes run Monday - Friday 9:00am to 12:00pm. Sessions 2 & 3 are SOLD OUT.     The Beginning Double-handed sailing course is designed for kids between 12 and 17. This course teaches students how to sail a 15ft two-person boat with two sails. This class teaches the basic fundamentals of sailing, including parts and terminology, how to trim sails and steer both as skipper and crew. This is a great place to start if you're interested in High School Sailing. This class is focused on fun and is intended to introduce kids to racing at the end of the course. Classes run Monday - Friday 9:00am to 12:00pm.
  • Afternoon Sessions (Learn to Race Classes)

    Afternoon classes run from 1 pm to 4 pm, Monday - Friday. Must have prior sailing experience to enroll in learn to race or Adventure sailing classes.
    The Beginning Sabot Racing course is designed for students that have sailed and feel comfortable in a Sabot. They will learn how to sail around a course and learn about how to tack and jibe correctly, as well as learn more about the wind and how it shifts. This is a great course for all kids that have an interest in racing and becoming an official Mission Bay Yacht Club Team Member. Classes run Monday - Friday 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Prerequisite: Completion of the Beginning Sabot Class or equivalent.
    This class is designed for students interested in learning the basic and intermediate techniques of sailing a Laser. This boat is the perfect transition from smaller Sabot to the much bigger Laser. In this class we will instruct the students on all the basics of the boat as well as boat handling, rigging, and an introduction to racing. The MBYC Junior’s have a limited amount of charter Lasers available, so having your own boat is recommended. Classes run Monday - Friday 1:00pm to 4:00pm.
    The Beginning Double-Handed Racing course is designed for kids who are interested in learning advanced racing skills. This class is designed for experienced sailors (including High School sailors) and is a challenging course. Classes run Monday - Friday 1:00pm to 4:00pm
    The Adventure Sailing Class is designed for those sailors who love the water but may not be as interested in competitive racing. This 2 week course will include, group sails, destination sails, swimming, games and much more. The recommended age for this class is 9 to 14. Students will explore all aspects of good seamanship: sailing, knot tying, navigation and the local marine ecosystems and environment. Classes will fill up quickly so make sure to register early! Classes run Monday - Friday 1:00pm to 4:00pm Session 1 is Sold Out. To be added to the waitlist, please email juniors@mbyc.org.
  • Racing Modules

    All racing modules run from 11 am to 4 pm, Monday - Friday.
    The Race Team "All In" program is for race team members that are planning to be sailing most of the summer. This allows sailors to jump from class to class without having to commit to one class or boat type. Sailors can choose from any of the race modules or adventure sailing programs to participate in. Junior Director approval is needed to enroll in class.
    This is our most advanced Sabot class. The class is designed to get sailors ready for all of the major events throughout the summer. Sailors will be put to the test with rigourous on the water drills, classroom discussions, and informative land drills. There are 3 Modules offered, each with varied regatta focuses. Classes run Monday - Friday 11:00am to 4:00pm.
    This Advanced Laser Module is geared towards the high level Laser sailor and Junior Director and Head Coach approval is needed for participation. Sailors will have vigorous on-the-water training as well as in-depth classroom discussions. Classes run Monday - Friday 11:00am to 4:00pm.
    This is our most advanced double-handed class for C40's and CFJ's. This class is designed to get sailors ready for all of the major events throughout the summer. Sailors will be put to the test with rigorous on-the-water drills, classroom discussions, and informative land drills. There will be 2 C420 Modules in the beginning part of the Summer Program followed by a CFJ Classes run Monday - Friday 11:00am to 4:00pm.
